Description

Situated in a one-way street on the border between Berchem and Mortsel, the property offers exceptional accessibility to schools, shops, railway, major roadways and the highway. The city can easily be reached by bicycle or tram.

For over half a century, this stunning façade concealed the home of a congregation of nuns. Today, it stands as a remarkably spacious family residence (+/- 350m²) brimming with character and charm.

Step through the elegant front door into a hallway adorned with authentic period features: a beautiful wooden staircase, classic wainscoting, and a striking bluestone floor. To the left, where the mother superior once conducted her affairs, you'll find a study that could easily be transformed into storage space or bicycle storage.

The living area immediately captivates with its irresistible charm. Wooden plank flooring, a welcoming fireplace, and soaring high ceilings create an atmosphere of timeless elegance. Through the dining area, you'll discover a sun-drenched veranda overlooking the delightfully sunny garden. The veranda also provides access to a garden room—perfect as a studio or hobby space. Adjacent to the veranda, the well-appointed kitchen features a cozy breakfast nook or additional dining area.

The first floor houses the master bedroom with its luxurious en-suite bathroom complete with bathtub, shower, double sink, and toilet. Here too, the high ceilings and abundant natural light continue to impress. Two additional rooms on this floor currently serve as an office and dressing room.

The second floor offers versatile living space—ideal as a children's domain or teenage retreat. It features two bedrooms with potential for a third, plus another bathroom equipped with shower, toilet, and sink.

Additional highlights include a spacious basement, fully insulated roof, and newly installed heat pump and solar panels (both from 2024).

Historic charm, central location, generous space, beautiful garden... What more to ask for?

The owners,

owner speaks out

Twenty years ago, we left the city seeking better connections to the rest of the country. When we first arrived here, we never imagined the neighborhood would affectionately nickname us 'Jan and Christel from the Little Monastery.' Yet gradually, this magnificent space transformed from the sisters' residence into our cherished home. Their chapel became our office, their visitor reception area now hosts our cozy evenings by the fire, and their veranda has become our cats' favorite retreat. The building presented perfect renovation potential: every room is more generously proportioned than standard, and natural light floods every space—a true luxury. We carefully preserved the soul of the Little Monastery throughout our renovations. It has evolved into a wonderful home with abundant space, where family and friends love to gather. We've invested tremendous love in our Little Monastery and received so much in return. Even before saying goodbye, we feel nostalgic, but we primarily hope that future owners will discover their own warm sanctuary in this property's abundant space, character, and welcoming atmosphere.
